Versatile Stone with Round and Tapered Sides

The Coticule Multiform Whetstone From Ardennes-Coticule is a versatile stone shaped for sharpening gouges and v-tools. The Multiform stone has two long edges: one is a round over and the other is tapered at 45 degrees. This combination of round and 45 degree edges allows the Multiform stone to fit the inside profiles of a wide range of gouges and v-tools.

Two Sizes

The Coticule Multiform Stones are of uniform thickness rather than having a tapering thickness likes their cousin the Belgian Blue Multiform Stone. The Coticule Multiform Stone is available in two different thicknesses: A thinner size that is less than 5mm thick (about 1/8" or less), and a thicker size of greater than 5mm (about 1/8" or more).

The shape of the Coticule Multiform Stones is variable, but they are a minimum of 50mm (about 2") in length.

Natural Coticule Stones From Belgium

The Ardennes region of Belgium has, for centuries, produced natural coticule stones famous as high quality whetstones. Sought after by Straight Razor Sharpeners, Woodworkers, Carvers and Leather Workers, these natural stones are not as abundant as they once were. A single quarry is still in operation in Belgium, hand producing these wonderful natural sharpening stones.

Coticule Stones

This particular type of whetstone is called a Coticule. They are characterized by a high concentration of spessartite garnets, have a characteristic white-yellow color, and are compared to water stones of 8,000 - 10,000 grit.

Note that Coticules are hand shaped, natural stones. The presence of hairline fractures is normal and not considered a defect. Some variance of size, color and exact composition is also normal.

Use With Water

Coticule Stones should only be used with water, never oil. They are non-porous and do not absorb liquid or clog with swarf, so there is no need to soak them prior to sharpening.
